Kaçkar Mountains Trekking Route
About this trail
The Kaçkar Mountains Trekking Route cuts through the heart of the Kaçkar massif in Rize province, threading between glacial cirque lakes, jagged volcanic ridges, and open alpine meadows that roll toward the horizon. The trail captures the dramatic shift from the cloud-fed, densely forested northern Black Sea slopes to the drier, sun-exposed southern faces, making it one of the most scenically varied high-mountain routes in Turkey; crossing that ecological divide on foot leaves a lasting impression. Encounters with highland herders on the summer yaylalar and views of snow-streaked summits add a raw, unhurried character to every stage of the journey. The terrain is genuinely demanding — loose scree, boulder fields, and steep gully crossings are common on the higher sections, so ankle-supporting boots and trekking poles are strongly advised. Water is plentiful on the northern flanks via snowmelt streams and springs, but sources thin out considerably on the southern side, making it wise to top up at every reliable stream. The window of safe, snow-free conditions is narrow: mid-July through late August offers the most stable weather, while June crossings risk icy passes and September brings sudden fog banks and early snowfall. Waymarking is inconsistent — some stretches are clearly cairned, others fade entirely — and navigating in low visibility requires a topographic map and compass or GPS. Basic accommodation and supplies can be found in villages such as Ayder and at some staffed yaylalar during the summer months, but self-sufficiency is essential outside peak season.
