Aegean Way
About this trail
The Efeler Yolu, or Aegean Way, cuts through the rugged interior of Turkey's Aegean hinterland, weaving between centuries-old olive groves, terraced hillsides, ancient ruins, and remote villages that few tourists ever reach. Named after the legendary Efe figures — the fierce and fiercely independent folk heroes of the Aegean — the trail embodies the wild, unhurried spirit of a landscape shaped by both history and hard terrain. The surface alternates between packed earth, loose gravel, and rocky limestone passages that demand sure footing and trekking poles. Heat is the primary risk: summer temperatures in this region regularly become dangerous for sustained hiking, and water sources thin out noticeably between villages, so carrying substantial reserves is essential. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, while the shoulder weeks of late October can bring rain and slippery ground. The trail is generally marked, but signage becomes sporadic in rural stretches, making a downloaded GPS track or a detailed topographic map non-negotiable. Accommodation relies on village guesthouses and the occasional welcoming household; resupply is possible in larger towns along the route, but the gaps between them require planning ahead.
