About this trail
Mount Ararat rises in solitary grandeur from the vast plains of eastern Turkey, a dormant stratovolcano whose glacier-capped summit at 5,137 metres has drawn climbers, pilgrims, and wanderers for centuries. The classic route from Doğubayazıt begins on loose volcanic scree and rugged basalt slopes before transitioning to snow and ice in the upper reaches, giving the ascent a genuinely mixed character that demands both endurance and basic mountaineering skills. On clear days the views reach across the Armenian highlands, the Iranian plateau, and the silhouette of Little Ararat rising from the same volcanic base. A typical ascent takes three to four days, with established camp sites at roughly 3,200 and 4,200 metres; the descent is often completed more quickly. Crampons and an ice axe are essential for the upper snowfields, and Turkish law requires all climbers to be accompanied by a licensed guide and to carry a government-issued permit arranged in advance through an authorised operator. Water sources above the first camp are scarce — carry sufficient reserves or melt snow with a stove. The optimal window runs from mid-July through late August; snow is still deep in early June and early winter storms can arrive without warning from late September onward. Acute mountain sickness is the primary hazard: the altitude gain is steep and the exposure prolonged, so a rest day at the intermediate camp for acclimatisation is a sound necessity rather than an optional luxury.
Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
