About this trail

The Lycian Way is a long-distance coastal trail running along Turkey's southwestern shore, from the Fethiye district of Muğla to the city of Antalya, through the heartland of the ancient Lycian civilization. The path moves between turquoise-edged sea cliffs, pine-forested hillsides, remote shepherd plateaus with sweeping Mediterranean views, and the crumbling harbors of cities that once commanded this coastline. Lycian rock tombs, Byzantine chapels, and antique harbor ruins appear beside the trail with striking regularity, making each day's walk as much a journey through history as through landscape. The terrain is predominantly rocky and uneven, with frequent steep climbs and descents that demand sturdy, ankle-supporting boots — trail runners will struggle on the loose scree and coastal limestone typical of the harder stretches. Water is the most critical planning factor: springs and village fountains exist along the route but many dry up entirely in summer, so carrying several liters between reliable sources is non-negotiable. The best walking windows are spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November); summer heat on exposed coastal ridges is extreme and poses a genuine risk of heat exhaustion over long, shadeless sections. Waymarking uses red-and-white paint blazes that are well-maintained in popular stretches but can fade or disappear on remote rocky terrain, making an offline GPS app or printed maps advisable. Accommodation ranges from family-run pensions in larger villages to wild camping on headlands; resupply points can be a full day's walk apart, so food planning requires attention before setting out.
