The Lycian Way traces the rugged southwestern coast of Turkey from Fethiye to Antalya, weaving through sea-cliffs, ancient ruins, pine forests, and remote coves that bear little resemblance to the busy resorts close by. Rock-cut Lycian tombs, sunken cities, and theatre ruins emerge around unexpected bends, giving the route a density of history that goes well beyond scenery alone. It is a trail of genuine contrasts — exposed coastal ridgelines one hour, shaded gorges the next, always with the Mediterranean glittering below. The terrain is predominantly limestone: loose rock, eroded steps, and short scrambling sections make sturdy, ankle-supporting footwear essential rather than optional. Water is the single most important logistical factor — many springs dry up entirely in summer, and long waterless stretches are the norm rather than the exception, so July and August should be firmly avoided. April through early June and October through mid-November are the reliable windows. Waymarking uses red-and-white paint blazes and is generally dependable on well-travelled sections, but fades in remote stretches, so a detailed offline map is mandatory kit. Towns like Kaş, Çıralı, and Fethiye offer plentiful guesthouses and resupply points, while quieter spots such as Kabak and Çavuşköy demand careful planning for both food and water before you arrive.
