About this trail

The Carian Way traces the ancient heartland of Caria across the southwestern corner of Turkey, linking the Aegean coastline of the Bodrum peninsula with the rugged interior of Muğla and Aydın provinces. It weaves past Hellenistic temple platforms, Byzantine fortresses, and Ottoman caravanserais — all set within a landscape of silvery olive groves, pine-scented ridges, and dry river valleys — making it one of the most historically saturated long-distance walks in the Mediterranean world. The terrain alternates between ancient cobbled roads, loose rocky descents, open scrubland, and shaded forest tracks, so sturdy ankle-supporting boots are non-negotiable. Water is the most pressing practical concern: springs and village fountains are unevenly spaced, some dry up entirely outside the rainy season, and shops can be many hours apart, making generous water reserves essential every single day. Spring (April to mid-June) and autumn (October to November) give the most comfortable conditions; summer heat along the Bodrum peninsula section becomes genuinely dangerous, and the inland stretches offer little relief. Waymarking follows the red-and-white stripe convention and is reliable across most of the route, but agricultural crossings and some village exits require careful map and GPS track use to stay on course. Accommodation ranges from family pensions and village guesthouses to wild camping, with no guarantee of a roof every night — resupply at larger settlements whenever possible and carry camping gear throughout.
