Tusheti Trek
About this trail
The Tusheti Trek cuts deep into one of the most remote and rewarding corners of the Greater Caucasus, winding through Tusheti National Park in Georgia's Akhmetis Raioni. Ancient defensive towers rise from ridgelines above isolated villages, while the high passes open onto sweeping views of glaciated peaks and rolling alpine meadows — the kind of landscape that feels genuinely untouched. This linear route demands real commitment and delivers a wilderness experience that is rare even by Caucasus standards. The season is very short: the high passes are only reliably snow-free between early July and late September, and the villages largely empty after that window closes. Terrain alternates between rocky, scree-laden cols and valley floors that turn muddy after rain, so stiff-soled, ankle-supporting boots are non-negotiable. Villages such as Omalo, Dartlo, and Shenako offer guesthouses and camping, serving as natural resupply points spaced along the route. Waymarking is inconsistent in places, and afternoon storms can roll dense cloud across exposed ridges within minutes, making solid navigation experience and reliable offline maps essential. Bears and wolves inhabit the area — food storage warrants care, and solo travel through the most remote sections should be approached with extra caution.
