Svaneti Traverse
About this trail
The Svaneti Traverse is one of the great mountain walks of the Caucasus, cutting across Upper Svaneti from the lowlands of Samegrelo to the ancient stone-towered village of Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited settlements in Europe. The route threads through glaciated peaks, wild river valleys, and remote highland communities where medieval defensive towers still stand watch over a landscape unchanged for centuries. For those willing to earn it, the traverse delivers an unmatched combination of raw alpine scenery and living cultural heritage. The window for safe passage runs from late June through early September; outside this period high passes hold deep snow and river crossings can turn dangerous. Terrain is relentlessly demanding — rocky high passes, steep grassy slopes, and river fords — requiring solid mountain boots and a good base of fitness before you start. Resupply is extremely limited once you leave the main villages, so food for several days must be carried and local guesthouses should be identified and contacted in advance wherever possible. Trail marking is inconsistent throughout, making a detailed GPX track and topographic maps essential rather than optional. The remoteness means self-rescue from injury can take days, so this route demands genuine mountain experience, not just endurance.
