Kazbegi Trek
About this trail
The Kazbegi Trek cuts through one of the most spectacular corners of the Greater Caucasus in Georgia's Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, where glaciated peaks, deep river gorges, and broad alpine meadows define the scenery at every turn. The medieval Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba), perched dramatically on a ridge above the Terek valley, and the massive ice-capped bulk of Mount Kazbek (Mkinvartsveri) serve as the route's two defining landmarks. This mixed-character trail demands genuine fitness and mountain awareness, but delivers some of the most rewarding high-Caucasus scenery a trekker can find. Lower sections follow clear valley tracks and dirt roads, while approaches toward the Gergeti Glacier involve loose moraines, boulder fields, and steep grass slopes where a slip has consequences — solid ankle support is not optional here. Water is widely available from mountain streams throughout, but should be filtered or treated before drinking. The reliable window runs from early June to late September; high passes can hold snow well into June, and fast-moving autumn storms make October a gamble. Stepantsminda offers a good range of guesthouses from basic to comfortable, and wild camping above the treeline is common and largely unrestricted. Beyond the well-worn path to Gergeti Church, waymarking is inconsistent, and a downloaded GPS track is strongly recommended for any section above the valley.
