About this trail

This route crosses the Great Caucasus range to link two of Georgia's most isolated highland regions — Tusheti and Khevsureti — passing through sweeping alpine meadows, boulder-strewn passes, and deep uninhabited gorges before descending to the medieval tower clusters of Shatili in the Argun valley. The landscape is consistently raw and monumental, and the near-total absence of other travelers for long stretches is as much a feature of the experience as the scenery itself. The Atsunta Pass is the defining crux of the trek, typically snowbound until mid-July and prone to violent afternoon thunderstorms and sudden whiteouts that make timing the crossing a genuine safety decision. Signage across the high sections is essentially nonexistent, so competent map reading or a reliable offline GPS track is not optional. The underfoot terrain varies throughout: boggy alpine turf, loose scree fields, and unbridged river fords that can rise sharply after rain or during snowmelt demand constant attention. The viable season runs from mid-July through early September; from mid-September onward the passes can shut abruptly with little warning. A few villages en route have rudimentary guesthouses and occasional resupply, but the route should be planned assuming full self-sufficiency in camping equipment and several days of provisions.
