Mestia to Ushguli Trek
About this trail
The trek from Mestia to Ushguli cuts through the heart of Upper Svaneti, one of the most remote and historically layered highland regions of the Greater Caucasus. The route links a chain of ancient Svan villages crowned with medieval defensive towers, threading between glaciated peaks, river valleys, and high mountain passes that open into sweeping views of the main Caucasus ridge. This is not a groomed trail but a living landscape where the path is shaped as much by seasonal snowmelt and cattle tracks as by any deliberate waymarking. The terrain shifts repeatedly between forested slopes, open alpine meadows, and rocky glacial terrain, with the section around Adishi Glacier demanding the most attention — the river crossing fed by glacial meltwater can be thigh-deep and fast-moving even in midsummer, and is best tackled in the early morning before afternoon snowmelt peaks. Navigation requires an offline mapping app since trail markings are inconsistent, particularly between villages. Guesthouses in Svan family homes along the route — notably in Zhabeshi, Adishi, and Iprari — provide meals and beds, but advance booking is strongly advisable in July and August. The high passes remain snowbound well into June; conditions deteriorate rapidly after September. Water is plentiful from streams throughout, though treatment is recommended.
