About this trail

The Pennine Way runs along the backbone of northern England through landscapes that are by turns austere, dramatic, and quietly beautiful — from the dark peat moors of the Dark Peak around Edale and Bleaklow Head, through the limestone grandeur of Malham, across the broad fells of the Yorkshire Dales near Keld, and on into the wind-scoured uplands of the North Pennines around Middleton-in-Teesdale, Gilsland, and Greenhead near Hadrian's Wall. It is a route defined as much by its wild, sometimes forbidding character as by its scenery, and it demands both physical endurance and confident navigation. Walkers should expect the full spectrum of upland English weather — often within a single day. The terrain on the southern sections around Bleaklow Head and Crowden is notoriously boggy, with deep peat groughs that can swallow a boot whole; waterproof footwear and gaiters are essential, not optional. The acorn waymarkers are consistent throughout, but in mist or low cloud on the open moorland they vanish quickly and map-and-compass competence becomes non-negotiable. Small villages like Malham, Keld, and Middleton-in-Teesdale offer resupply and accommodation, but options thin out considerably in the North Pennines between Gilsland and Greenhead, making forward planning important. Late spring through early autumn offers the most reliable conditions; in winter, deep snowpack, flooded paths, and short daylight make the high ground genuinely hazardous. On the exposed ridge sections, rapid weather deterioration carries a real hypothermia risk — carry full waterproofs and emergency kit regardless of what the forecast says.
