About this trail
The Cape Wrath Trail is widely considered one of the most demanding long-distance routes in the British Isles, running from Fort William northward through the heart of the Scottish Highlands to the windswept headland at the far northwestern tip of the mainland. The trail passes through a succession of extraordinary landscapes — the forested glens around Invergarry and Gairlochy, the high passes of Kintail near Morvich, the raw moorlands of Sutherland beyond the Oykel — each more remote than the last. It is a route of profound solitude and raw natural beauty, traversing terrain largely unchanged since the last ice age. This is an unmarked route, and confident navigation with map and compass is a non-negotiable skill; the low cloud and mist that frequently settle over these hills can strip away visual references for hours at a time, and GPS should be treated as a backup rather than a primary tool. The ground is notoriously boggy, particularly in the northern sections, making waterproof boots with gaiters essential rather than optional. Bridgeless river crossings are a defining and potentially dangerous feature of the trail — after sustained rainfall, some crossings become impassable, and the willingness to wait or reroute is critical. Resupply options are extremely sparse between the handful of small villages like Strathcarron and Oykel Bridge, so food planning for each section must be meticulous before setting out. The most reliable window runs from late May through September; summer brings biting midges in still, damp conditions, while a winter attempt on this route is a serious mountaineering undertaking in every sense.
Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
