About this trail
This western section of the Southern Upland Way begins at the small harbour of Portpatrick on Scotland's exposed Atlantic edge and pushes inland through coastal farmland, open moorland, and the vast commercial forests of Galloway. The character of the walking shifts continuously — from windswept cliff tops and green pastures to broad heather ridges and cathedral-dark plantation rows — revealing a remote and sparsely populated corner of Dumfries & Galloway that few walkers pass through. Ground conditions are frequently boggy and can be deeply muddy outside the summer months; late May through early September offers the most reliable underfoot conditions and the best chance of settled weather. The long forest passage between New Luce and Bargrennan is the most isolated stretch on this section, with no services for many hours of walking — it is essential to top up food and water in Stranraer or New Luce before heading into the interior. The route is signed with the Scottish thistle symbol but demands careful navigation in open moorland and inside the plantations, where mist can render the path indistinct; carry a map and compass regardless of forecast. Accommodation clusters around Portpatrick and Stranraer and thins out dramatically through the Galloway interior, making advance booking non-negotiable. Streams provide water throughout, though a filter is advisable for the forestry sections where animal grazing is heavy.
Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
