About this trail

This southern stretch of the Offa's Dyke Path follows the England-Wales borderland through the deep wooded gorge of the Wye Valley, shifting character as it goes: open farmland and rounded hills near Pandy give way to dramatic riverside woodland as you push south through Monmouth, Llandogo, and Brockweir toward Chepstow. The ruins of Tintern Abbey seen through riverside trees and the medieval battlements of Chepstow Castle at the trail's end make this one of the most scenically rewarding finales of any long-distance path in Britain. The Wye Valley section between Monmouth and Chepstow demands respect — steep wooded slopes, root-laced paths, and sections that turn dangerously slippery after rain make sturdy ankle-supporting boots essential rather than optional. The Offa's Dyke earthwork itself is barely visible this far south; the draw here is the river scenery and medieval heritage, not the dyke. Monmouth, Tintern, and Chepstow all offer accommodation and resupply, making the section workable as a multi-day stage or a long day walk with a car shuttle. Spring and autumn provide the best combination of weather and colour; summer brings significant foot traffic around Tintern. The National Trail acorn waymarks are reliable throughout, though the woodland paths around Llandogo and Brockweir deserve careful attention in poor visibility.

Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
