Common questions

Do I need an account to use this site?

No. Every trail, stage, route option and nearby route on this site is open — no sign-up, no paywall. An account only matters in the mobile app, where your walks are saved to your profile.

Where do the distances and elevation figures come from?

From GPS tracks recorded by walkers, grouped and cleaned by our pipeline — not from official trail signage. That is why a stage may differ by a few hundred metres from a guidebook, and why some trails offer several route options for the same section.

Can I follow a route from the browser?

No. Turn-by-turn following, voice guidance, offline maps and GPS recording need a phone in your pocket and background location, so they live in the Snail Trail app for Android and iOS. Use the site to choose, the app to walk.

What are “nearby routes”?

Walks recorded by different people over the same ground, grouped by location and shape. The number next to each one is how many people walked it — the most useful signal that a path actually exists and is passable.

Which countries are covered?

Coverage grows as the pipeline processes each country. Curated long-distance trails are listed by country on this site; community-recorded nearby routes already span most of Europe and the Americas.
