About this trail

The Caminho Português is one of the most historically grounded Atlantic routes to Santiago de Compostela, winding through the vineyard country and granite-cobbled market towns of northern Portugal before crossing into the rain-green hills of Galicia. The old international bridge between Valença and Tui marks one of the route's defining moments — a palpable shift in landscape, language, and light as you step from one country into the other. Compared to busier caminos, this path retains a quieter intimacy along most of its length, with village life unfolding naturally on either side of the trail rather than staging itself for pilgrims. The surface is predominantly asphalt, concrete, and granite cobblestone; cumulative impact on knees and heels over consecutive days is real, making well-cushioned footwear far more important here than on softer mountain routes. Gradient is generally moderate, with the most demanding sections appearing in the rolling Galician countryside as you approach Santiago from the south. Water and resupply are never a concern — villages, cafés, and small supermarkets appear frequently enough that carrying more than a single day's provisions is unnecessary. Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons; summer heat on the open Portuguese sections can be significant, while winter brings persistent rainfall and early darkness through Galicia. Yellow arrow waymarking is consistent through rural stretches but can thin considerably in larger towns — a habit of scanning low pays off, since markers are often painted at foot level on walls and curbs.

Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
