About this trail

The Gokyo Lakes Trek threads through the heart of Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal's Khumbu region, tracing a chain of sacred glacial lakes before climbing to Gokyo Ri, a summit from which Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu all crowd the horizon at once. Far quieter than the Everest Base Camp corridor, this route offers a rawer encounter with the high Himalaya, with Nepal's largest glacier, the Ngozumpa, running alongside the upper valley and the vivid turquoise lakes punctuating the landscape below. The terrain is predominantly rocky mountain trail, with moraine-covered sections near the glacier that demand sure footing and concentration. Altitude sickness is the most serious hazard on this route; plan acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and again in Machhermo before pushing higher. Teahouses are available throughout, though options thin out and simplify considerably above Dole. Spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November) are the optimal windows; the monsoon brings persistent rain, mud, and leeches, while deep winter can leave high sections buried under snow. The trail is well-marked through the Sherpa villages but becomes ambiguous above the treeline in poor visibility — hiring a local guide for the upper sections is a sound call.
