About this trail

The Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the world's most iconic high-altitude journeys, threading through the Khumbu Valley from the small airstrip at Lukla to the very foot of the Khumbu Icefall beneath the highest summit on earth. The route winds through the heart of Sagarmatha National Park past living Sherpa villages, ancient monasteries, mani walls, and yak pastures, with the towering faces of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse commanding the skyline at every turn. It is as much a cultural walk as a mountain one, and the landscape transforms progressively from lush rhododendron and pine forest into the stark, wind-scraped moraine above Gorak Shep. The trail is well-marked throughout and presents no real navigation challenge; a continuous chain of teahouses from Lukla to Gorak Shep provides accommodation and meals, so no camping gear is needed. Altitude sickness is the defining hazard of this route — acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche are essential practice, not optional extras, and trekkers who push through them frequently require evacuation. Lower trail sections run on firm earthen paths through forest; above Dingboche the ground becomes rocky moraine, and the final approach to Base Camp crosses unstable glacial debris that demands careful footing. Water sources are plentiful along the route but must be treated before drinking, particularly at higher elevations. October through November and March through May offer the most stable weather and clearest mountain views; the monsoon from June to August brings persistent cloud cover and treacherous conditions on the upper trail, while January and February deliver extreme cold and frequent closures on high sections.
