Zuiderzee Path
About this trail
The Zuiderzeepad follows the historical shoreline of the former Zuiderzee through the flat, wide-open landscape of Noord-Holland. This short linear section leads walkers across characteristic Dutch polders and along grass-covered dykes, with broad views stretching over the IJsselmeer or Markermeer under the enormous skies that define this region. Old fishing villages and land reclaimed from the sea tell the story of centuries of Dutch life alongside the water. The terrain is entirely flat with no elevation gain, but walking into a North Sea wind on an exposed dyke top can be more demanding than it looks. The surface alternates between grassy dyke paths and clay farm tracks that turn slick and heavy underfoot after rain, making waterproof boots with a firm sole a sensible choice even in summer. The route is part of the Dutch LAW long-distance network and signed with the characteristic mushroom-shaped posts called paddenstoeltjes, which provide reliable navigation in normal conditions. There are no water sources along the route itself; carry enough for the full section, though nearby villages offer the chance to resupply. Spring through early autumn is the most comfortable window; in winter, paths can become waterlogged and dyke surfaces occasionally flood. As a linear route, return transport needs to be arranged in advance.
