Trekbird Path
About this trail
The Trekvogelpad is a one-way long-distance trail that cuts through the open polder landscapes, river flood plains, and reed-fringed wetlands of Utrecht province, following the ancient flyways of migratory birds — a fact reflected in its name, which translates literally as Migratory Bird Path. The route links nature reserves, canal banks, and quiet agricultural stretches, offering an immersive experience of the flat, wide-skied Dutch countryside that rewards patience and attentiveness over dramatic scenery. The terrain is predominantly flat but the ground can be deceptive: polder paths become waterlogged quickly after rain and some sections hold standing water well into spring, making waterproof boots essential rather than optional. Waymarking follows the Dutch ANWB mushroom-post (paddenstoel) system and is reliable throughout. Spring and autumn are the strongest seasons, coinciding with peak bird migration and more agreeable trail conditions; winter crossings are possible but expect heavy going underfoot. Villages and small towns appear at regular enough intervals to make overnight logistics straightforward, with accommodation and resupply available without carrying large loads between stops.
