Pieterpad
About this trail
The northern stretch of the Pieterpad moves through the wide-open farmland of Groningen, across the heathlands and ancient hunebedden of Drenthe, and into the wooded edges of Overijssel — a traverse that lays bare the quiet, unhurried character of the Dutch countryside at its most unadorned. Big skies, birch and pine forest, Bronze Age burial mounds, and centuries-old farmsteads set the rhythm of this contemplative long-distance walk. The terrain is predominantly flat to gently rolling with no meaningful elevation gain; sandy forest tracks and heathland paths turn slippery and waterlogged after rain, making waterproof footwear essential. The trail is exceptionally well signed with red-and-white Pieterpad markers, so navigation is straightforward throughout. Villages along the route allow for resupply, but gaps between them can be long enough that carrying sufficient food and water between stops matters. Spring and early autumn are the best windows — summer brings biting insects on the heathlands, and winter makes low-lying sections genuinely boggy. Guesthouses and small B&Bs are available in villages along the way, but options are limited and booking ahead is strongly advised.
