Sinjajevina Shepherd's Trail
About this trail
Sinjajevina Shepherd's Trail cuts through the heart of the Sinjajevina plateau, one of the largest highland pastures in the Balkans and a landscape shaped by transhumant shepherding for centuries. The route moves through wide open meadows, gently rolling ridgelines, and shallow karst depressions dotted with seasonal pools, offering an immersive experience of a living pastoral landscape rather than dramatic rocky summits. Spanning the boundaries of Kolašin, Šavnik, and Mojkovac municipalities, the trail carries a genuine sense of remoteness and a quietness that is increasingly rare in the region. The terrain is predominantly open grassland, but boggy sections appear after rain and throughout early summer while snowmelt is still draining — waterproof footwear is not optional. Trail marking is sparse to nonexistent in stretches; shepherd paths branch and converge without warning, so a GPS track loaded before departure is essential for reliable navigation. Water sources are plentiful across the plateau but should be filtered given the sustained livestock presence. The window from late June through early September gives the most stable conditions; afternoon thunderstorms build rapidly and the exposed plateau offers almost no shelter, making an early start genuinely important. Kolašin is the nearest town for resupply, overnight accommodation, and onward transport.
