Durmitor Ring
About this trail
The Durmitor Ring encircles the Durmitor massif in northwestern Montenegro, threading through one of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in the Balkans. The route links glacial lakes, wind-exposed ridgelines, dense spruce and pine forests, and wide highland pastures known as katun, all within and around Durmitor National Park. It is a demanding journey through a wild, largely unpopulated highland that rewards with extraordinary views at every turn. The terrain is predominantly limestone karst — rocky, uneven, and often steep, with few long flat sections. Water is accessible from glacial lakes and streams along much of the route, but high plateau stretches can have lengthy dry intervals, so carrying reserves is essential. The optimal window runs from early July to late September; snowfields blocking the high passes can persist well into June, and from October onward sudden snowfall and dense fog make navigation genuinely hazardous. Trail markings are reliable in forested sections but fade on open rock and plateaus, where a paper map and compass are mandatory, not optional. Žabljak is the only reliable resupply point; mountain huts along the way are scarce and frequently unmanned, so food and shelter must be planned carefully in advance. Rapid weather shifts, afternoon thunderstorms, and lightning on exposed ridges are serious hazards throughout summer.
