Peaks of the Balkans
About this trail
The Peaks of the Balkans is a legendary circular route threading through the wild heart of the Western Balkans, linking Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro along the dramatic ridges and valleys of the Prokletije — the Albanian Alps. Walkers pass through remote villages like Valbona and Theth, ford turbulent mountain streams, and cross high passes with sweeping views over three nations, all while encountering highland communities whose way of life has changed little over centuries. It ranks among Europe's most rewarding long-distance trails, as much a cultural journey as an alpine challenge. The terrain shifts constantly between rocky high passes, dense forest tracks, grassy meadow ridges, and river-bottom paths, demanding solid fitness and sure-footedness on varied and sometimes loose surfaces; several passes involve sustained, steep ascents. A network of family-run guesthouses along the route provides meals and beds, but booking well in advance is essential in peak summer months when capacity fills quickly. The ideal window runs from late June through early September — snow lingers on the high passes deep into spring and returns in early autumn, making out-of-season travel genuinely hazardous. Waymarking has improved considerably but remains inconsistent in places, particularly at border crossings and on higher terrain, so a downloaded offline map and GPX track are indispensable; a valid passport is equally non-negotiable, as active border controls must be crossed.
