Via Spluga
About this trail
Via Spluga traces a historic alpine corridor that has connected the Rhine Valley to Italy since Roman times, threading through the dramatic Hinterrhein gorges before rising toward the high Splügen Pass in the canton of Graubünden. The route rewards walkers with a rare combination of rugged alpine scenery and the unmistakable sense of treading a path worn by merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims over many centuries. The trail surface alternates between original Roman paving stones — treacherously slick when wet — and compacted dirt or gravel track; boots with a firm, ankle-supporting sole are not optional here. The climb toward the pass is sustained and unrelenting rather than technically difficult, demanding a steady pace and good aerobic fitness. Water is plentiful in the lower valley sections from streams and village fountains, but thins out considerably near the pass, so top up reserves before the upper stretch. The window from late June through September offers the most reliable conditions; snow can linger on the high pass well into early summer, and autumn storms can roll in abruptly with fresh snowfall. Swiss yellow-diamond waymarking is consistent throughout the route, though dense mountain fog — common at elevation — is the main navigation challenge.
