About this trail

The Haute Route is one of the great alpine journeys on the continent, linking Chamonix beneath Mont Blanc to Zermatt in the shadow of the Matterhorn through a sustained traverse of high passes, glacial valleys, and remote mountain terrain shared between France and Switzerland. The route weaves through tiny Savoyard and Valaisian farming villages, past turquoise alpine lakes, and across wild ridgelines that deliver unbroken views of some of the highest summits in Europe. It is a route that rewards experience and fitness in equal measure, offering genuine high-mountain wilderness without ever straying far from the thread of alpine culture. The terrain is demanding from start to finish — rocky trails, loose moraine, and steep ascents to passes well above 2,500 metres — making sturdy ankle-support boots and a full layered kit for rapid weather changes non-negotiable. Water is readily available in valley sections and at mid-elevation streams, but scarce on exposed high passes, so filling up before major climbs is essential. The reliable window runs from mid-July to mid-September; earlier in summer the upper passes can hold dangerous consolidated snowpack, and from October onwards early autumn storms can close routes without warning. Waymarking transitions from French yellow-and-red blazes to Swiss red-and-white markers at the border and is generally trustworthy, though cairns vanish quickly in cloud. Mountain refuges and gîtes d'étape are well-spaced to allow staged overnight stops, but advance reservations are essential in peak season as popular huts fill weeks ahead.
