Albula Bernina Landscape Trail
About this trail
The Albula/Bernina Landscape Trail winds through one of the most scenic corners of Graubünden, tracing the route of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway across viaducts, through narrow gorges, and past traditional Romansh villages. The landscape shifts between high alpine meadows, dense larch forests, and the dramatic stonework of railway engineering that has defined this valley for over a century. Walkers experience the rare combination of wilderness and living cultural heritage at almost every bend. The terrain underfoot is a mix of rocky single-track and grassy paths that can turn slippery after rain or in early morning when dew lingers, so sturdy boots with ankle support are strongly recommended. Swiss waymarking is reliable throughout, with yellow signs and painted rock markers keeping navigation straightforward even in mist. The window from mid-July to late September gives the most stable conditions; snow can linger above the valley floor well into June and return by October. Small villages along the way allow for food and water resupply, but always carry sufficient water between settlements. Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly in this topography, making an early start essential on longer days.
