Pelion Kalderimi Trail Network
About this trail
The Pelion Kalderimi trail network follows ancient cobblestone mule paths — many of Byzantine origin — winding across the Pelion Peninsula in Thessaly and linking its hilltop villages through dense forests of chestnut and oriental plane trees. The peninsula's unusual topography means you can look down over the calm Pagasetic Gulf on one side and the open North Aegean on the other, sometimes within the same day's walk, with traditional stone villages like Makrinitsa, Tsagarada, and Milies providing natural resting points along the way. The cobblestones are old and uneven, and after rain they become genuinely treacherous — waterproof boots with solid grip are essential, not optional. The trail alternates between steep, short climbs linking terraced hillsides and gentler contour paths through forest; there is no single sustained ascent, but cumulative elevation gain adds up noticeably over multiple days. Water is available at village fountains along the route, though inter-village stretches can be long enough to warrant carrying a reserve. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable walking; summer brings oppressive humidity under the forest canopy, and higher sections can ice over in winter. Waymarking varies considerably between sections, so downloading a GPS track before setting out is strongly advised. Village guesthouses provide accommodation throughout, but advance booking is recommended during the busier spring and summer months.
