E4 European Long Distance Path
About this trail
The E4 European Long Distance Path cuts across the raw, rocky interior of Crete, winding over sun-scorched limestone plateaus, through dramatic gorges, and past remote mountain villages that feel far removed from the island's coastal resorts. Tracing the flanks of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the ancient ridgelines that run the island's spine, this trail reveals the austere, time-worn face of Crete that has persisted for centuries beneath the cliffs and scrubland of its high country. The terrain is predominantly rough and uneven — loose limestone, exposed ridges, and steep gorge descents demand sure-footed hiking and sturdy, ankle-supporting boots. Water is the most critical logistical challenge on this route: springs are unevenly spaced and many dry up entirely by late summer, making it essential to verify source conditions before each day's stage and carry extra capacity. Spring (April to early June) and early autumn (September to October) are the ideal windows; midsummer heat in the mountains regularly reaches dangerous levels and should be avoided. The yellow-and-black E4 waymarks are reliable on the more frequented stretches but thin out in remote passages, so a topographic map and basic navigation skills are necessary. Villages along the way offer opportunities to resupply and find simple accommodation, but services vary considerably and advance planning is strongly recommended.
