About this trail
Stretching along the third finger of the Chalkidiki peninsula in northern Greece, the Mount Athos Peninsula Trail winds through an autonomous monastic republic that has remained largely unchanged for over a millennium, and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Ancient Byzantine cobbled paths — kalderimi — connect twenty ruling monasteries set among dense Mediterranean forest, rocky coastlines, and terraced gardens, with the sacred peak rising dramatically at the southern tip of the peninsula. Entry is restricted to men only, and a special permit called the diamonitirion must be arranged weeks in advance through the Pilgrims' Bureau in Thessaloniki, as daily quotas are strictly enforced. Terrain varies considerably: well-preserved kalderimi sections are manageable, but the ascent to the summit of Mount Athos demands surefootedness and care on loose rock and steep gullies. Water is reliably available at the monasteries, but stretches between them can be long and dry in the warmer months. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions; summer heat and humidity make exposed and forested sections grueling. The monasteries provide accommodation in their guesthouses (arhontariki), but meals and rest are governed by the monastic schedule — plan your itinerary around these constraints from the outset.
Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
