About this trail

The Samaria Gorge carves through the heart of Crete's White Mountains (Lefka Ori), forming one of the longest and most dramatic canyons in Europe. The trail descends from the highland plateau at Xyloskalo through towering vertical limestone walls, narrowing passages, and ancient riverbeds before emerging at the Libyan Sea in the village of Agia Roumeli. The entire route passes through a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where Cretan wild goats (kri-kri) pick their way along the cliffs and griffon vultures circle overhead. The terrain underfoot is almost entirely rounded river stones and loose rock, making proper hiking boots with ankle support non-negotiable — trail runners and sneakers account for the majority of injuries on this trail. Natural spring water sources are plentiful throughout the gorge and safe to drink. Waymarking is clear and route-finding presents no difficulty. The trail is open from late April through early October and closes immediately when rain raises flash flood risk; the narrowest section known as the Gates (Sideroportes), where walls squeeze to just a few metres apart, can fill with little warning. May, June, and September offer the best combination of bearable heat and manageable crowds; July and August bring punishing temperatures and peak visitor numbers. Agia Roumeli has no road access — the passenger ferry to Hora Sfakion or Sougia is the only way out, so check the last departure time before you start walking.

Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
