About this trail

The Alta Via della Valle d'Aosta n.1 is a high-altitude traverse of the southern mountain chain of the Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy, running from the Courmayeur area to Champorcher through the heart of the Graian Alps. Throughout the route, walkers are treated to sweeping panoramas toward Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Gran Paradiso massif, while the landscape shifts between rocky passes, lush alpine meadows, and clear mountain lakes. This is a serious mountain itinerary that demands experience with high-altitude terrain and rewards those who take it on with a genuine sense of alpine wilderness. The route spends most of its length above 2,000 metres, and north-facing passes can hold snow well into summer — starting before mid-July carries real risk of hard snow on steep ground, and crampons may be advisable early in the season. Waymarking follows the CAI red-and-white system and is generally reliable, though route-finding requires care in poor visibility. The chain of rifugi along the way provides accommodation and meals, making bivouacking largely unnecessary, but advance booking is essential in August when demand peaks. Water is available at the rifugi and from streams and snowmelt in the upper zones, though natural sources should be treated before drinking. The optimal window runs from mid-July to early September; autumn cold snaps can arrive suddenly and turn passes icy well before the calendar might suggest.

Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
