About this trail
The GR34 traces the entire coastline of the Brittany peninsula in northwestern France, following the ancient route once patrolled by customs officers — giving it its other name, the Sentier des Douaniers. Towering cliffs, sheltered coves, wild Atlantic beaches, pink granite boulder fields, and tidy fishing harbors succeed one another while the sea is never far from sight, and the looping nature of the trail means the character of the coast shifts constantly underfoot. The terrain alternates between rocky headlands, sandy beaches, and occasional inland woodland stretches; after rain, cliff-top sections become slippery, and several passages near estuaries and tidal flats are only passable at low tide — checking local tide tables before those sections is essential. Waymarking with red and white GR blazes is thorough and reliable throughout. Coastal villages appear at regular intervals, making resupply and overnight accommodation straightforward, with gîtes d'étape, campsites, and hotels all available along the route. Spring and early autumn offer the best combination of manageable crowds, stable weather, and long daylight hours; summer brings heavy tourist traffic to the most scenic stretches, while winter delivers fierce Atlantic gales and treacherous conditions on exposed cliff-edge paths.
Distances, elevation and times are approximate; follow waymarks and local conditions on the trail.
